The problems with the child support system

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2017 | Family Law, Firm News

The child support system was created with only the best intentions for children of the United States, and offers a vital way to ensure consistency in support for all children, especially the most vulnerable. However, like most things, it is far from perfect. Today, it could be said that the system makes life difficult for fathers, especially when they are struggling with a low income. However, being aware of the faults in the system can help fathers to be prepared for the challenges that they will face.

The problem with an outdated system

The child support system as we know it today was created in the 1970s, based on a family unit that saw the father as the main or sole bread-winner. It is also a system that assumes steady incomes and the availability of the mother to provide the majority of care to the children. In 2017, it is simply not the reality that divorcing families are facing. The mother is likely to have a job and the father may be acting as the primary caregiver.

Fathers are put at a disadvantage

With almost one-third of the families in the child support system living below the poverty line, some fathers simply cannot afford the child support orders that have been placed upon them. This can create dangerous situation of accumulating debt for dads.

Although the child support system is far from perfect, family lawyers are always going to fight for fairness and challenge the limitations of the system. If you believe you have been subject to an unfair child support ruling, it is advisable to speak to a trusted legal advisor.  Please contact the Quinn Law Firm at 814-806-2518 for additional information and to schedule a consultation.
