How can I prevent drunk driving over the holidays?

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2018 | DWI, Firm News

If you’re hosting a gathering over the holidays, chances are you’ll be serving some form of alcoholic beverages. In this case, it’s important to make sure your friends and family don’t drink and drive, which can lead to devastating injuries and run-ins with law enforcement. 21 Century Insurance offers the following tips, which will help you keep your loved ones safe and sound this holiday season.

Designate a driver

Ask all of your guests who plan on attending to designate a driver. In the event that there are no designated drivers, make accommodations in your home so your guests can stay over. You can also provide the number for local cab companies or encourage your loved ones to use rideshare services. If one of your guests is clearly drunk and attempting to leave, do everything you can to stop them.

Provide food along with drinks

If you’re going to serve alcohol, having plenty of food options is also important. Drinking on an empty stomach means that the alcohol will have a much stronger impact, which could lead to your guests becoming more inebriated than they planned. Along with finger foods and snacks, try to have more substantial items available to make sure everyone gets their fill.

Offer non-alcoholic beverages

It’s also a good idea to have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on hand to ensure your guests have options. An ample selection may result in less people drinking, which can make for a safer time overall. You can even offer “virgin” concoctions of popular mixed drinks to keep with the holiday spirit. Ask your guests ahead of time what they would prefer to ensure everyone is covered.
